Their Story…

“It all began in 2002, when Tom bought a home on a beautiful mountainside in lovely Fannin County, and thought “This hillside would make a great vineyard.”  

“He planted some grapes – all kinds of grapes – and waited.  Five years, experiments with the deer repellent Buck-B-Gone, and a fence later, he had his first press.  As he sat in his driveway at midnight de-stemming the crush by hand, he thought, “This is a lot of work.”  

“While Tom was waiting for his grapes to grow, he started German Kino Plus, a cable ​network targeted to Germans living in the United States. He travelled to Germany frequently to buy movies.  He was wise enough to plan some of those trips in October, so he could spend his evenings in Munich’s biergartens.”

“With the wine now safely aging in bottles, he now sat at the communal table in the Augustiner BierGarten.  Lifting his stein and listening to the oompah bands, he daydreamed – “What else can I sell to Germans in the US?”  Pickles.  Bread.  Beer!  The seeds for Fannin Brewing Company were formed.”

“Back home, the wine made great Christmas gifts, and was a hit with friends and family, but Tom was on to more bubbly things.  Enter Fannin Brewing Company.”

“Tom chose Fannin County for two simple reasons:  Fresh air and fresh water make for fresh beer.   He hooked up with Pat Walker at Blue Ridge Brewery, who was also planning to produce his own brews.  Tom bought the equipment, Pat built the space, and they began selling their first beers in October 2012.”

“By June 2013,  a deal with Eagle Rock Distributing was signed, and Fannin Brewing Company’s beers were on tap in 8 restaurants, then 14, then 24.   In October, FBC became the house brewer for Barnsley Gardens.  In just 4 months, we had reached capacity – time to move on.”  

“In April 2014 we began brewing in our new location – 3758 East First Street.  We opened our tasting room in May, and signed with Leon Farmer in June, so that our beers could be found in Dahlonega, Blairsville and points east. “

“We won our first award in October 2014 – a People’s Choice Award for our Rory’s Pumpkin Ale – at the Grayson Beer Festival.”

“Early in 2015, we signed with both Atlanta Beverage, servicing the city of Atlanta, and Tarver Distributing, serving Tennessee, and we began bottling both Hiawasee Golden Ale and Toccoa Brown.  A deal with Crown in 2016 expanded our Tenesee footprint. So, we’ve added much more capacity – 15 barrel fermenters! – so that we can keep up with demand. Come visit while there’s still room for you in the brew space!”

Amongst the famed apple orchards of Ellijay in Gilmer County, GA lies the county’s first vineyard, Cartecay Vineyards. Named for the region of the county in which the vineyard is situated, Cartecay, Cherokee for Bread Valley, has a rich terroir; a combination of factors, including soil, climate and environment, that gives our wines unique and distinctive character.

We believe that the terroir of Cartecay allows our vines to grow, age and produce grapes of the highest quality, which in turn allows us to produce wine of the highest quality.

“Located in the Northeast Georgia Mountains in Rabun County, Stonewall Creek Vineyards is a small artisan vineyard and winery focused on growing exceptional grapes and making fine dry wines. Our first vines were planted in 2005, with additional vines planted the next three years for a total of five acres of European vinifera — Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Petit Verdot, Tannat and Petit Manseng. We added a second label in 2014 (Standing Deer Cellar), which features a Norton and Norton blend (Buck Red) and a semi-sweet (Whitetail) made from Petit Manseng. Grapes on this label were harvested at The Stack Farm just down the road. We opened our winery in August 2012 and opened our Tasting Room Cave in 2015. “The first vineyards at Tiger Mountain were planted on the five-generation-old Ezzard farm in Northeast Georgia in 1995, and the first vintages date to 1999. The 2,000-foot altitude, cool mountain nights and well-drained slopes, which consist of the decayed granite soils of the ancient Blue Ridge, are an ideal terroir for certain European vinifera and the native American Norton. A divided trellis system prevents excessive canopy, allowing sunlight and movement of air though the vines. The grapes are harvested by hand, and the wine is made using traditional European small winery methods in the fermentation, barrel aging and blending processes.”

“The vinifera grapes cultivated at Tiger are carefully selected French and Portuguese reds–Cabernet Franc, Touriga Nacional, Tannat, Malbec, Mourvedre  as well as the native American Norton; white grapes are Viognier and the rare Petit Manseng. The award winning wines are sold in Georgia’s major cities and are listed in top restaurants, including four five stars.”

“We are are small, farm winery that planted our first vines in 2009 and currently have about 3200 vines on approximately 6 acres. We have 7 varieties planted with future plans to expand. We now offer 6 wines in our tasting room, “Chatuga White”, an off-dry Vidal Blanc, “Trillium”, a blend of 3 grapes which are Sauvignon Blanc, Marsanne, and Vidal Blanc. Our “Red Clay Rose” is a naturally fermented Cabernet Franc. We offer 3 reds which are “Cynthiana” (aka Norton) which is a smooth dry red, “Deliverance”(yes, it is named after the movie that was filmed not far from us!), our biggest red, is a bordeaux blend from Tannat, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc, and finally, our off dry red is “Chatuga Red” which is made with the same grapes as Deliverance but blended differently and some residual sugar has been added to make it a refreshing Sangria-like wine that is great served chilled. We have a gorgeous setting and facility for weddings, parties, etc. with events planned throughout the year. “We have been growing grapes since 2009 and add another 180-or-so vines each year. Currently we have 3.5 acres planted in European varietals and French-American hybrids. “A passion for vineyards and fine wines began many years ago when Jim was stationed in Europe in the early 1980’s. Sandra and Jim’s appreciation for wine continued for nearly 20 years, leading to a retirement in North Georgia, and establishing a small home vineyard. After a brief period of home winemaking, an opportunity evolved when Jim and Sandra bought the 29 acre tract where the now Cottage Vineyard and Winery dream came to life. While clearing the land and getting the first vines planted, work concurrently started on making the first wines in anticipation of opening their tasting room in 2013. By forming relationships with other Georgia wineries, meeting winemaker, Joe Smith, Sandra’s son Nathan joining the team, and Georgia London spear-headed the vineyard, the Cottage family came to life. Angela Reilly, hired week-one, brought experienced help in the tasting room and shortly after became the tasting room manager; with several other great servers over time joining the team. All of the “family” came together, joining the gorgeous mountain views, great wines and strong dedicated team brings our family to yours.”

Their Story…

“Producing Georgia wines since 1983, Habersham Vineyards & Winery is one of Georgia’s largest and oldest wineries with production exceeding 15,000 cases annually. Located just one half mile from Alpine Helen in Nacoochee Village, the winery features daily tastings, a large gift shop with a great selection of unique wine specialty items and gourmet food products.”

“The production area including the tank room, bottling line and barrel room may be viewed from the tasting room.”

“We utilize our best grapes and oak barrels to produce our premium, vintage dated, varietal Creekstone wines. Our popular Habersham label includes varietal vinefera wines as well as blended wines using both vinefera and French-American grapes. Our Southern Harvest wines utilize the native muscadine grape as well as fruit flavors and are nostalgic for many Southerners.”

“Most of the grapes used in our wines are from two company owned vineyards, Mossy Creek and Stonepile, which yield around 150 tons annually. Varieties grown include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Riesling, Seyval, Vidal and Chambourcin. We also purchase other varietals such as Sangiovese and Viognier from nearby Blackstock Vineyards and produce Muscadine wines from grapes grown in South Georgia.”
