1828- Gold was discovered in the Duke’s Creek area and was the beginning of a gold rush.
December 22, 1857- White County was created, from Habersham County. The new county was named in honor of David T. White, a Newton County representative who helped a Habersham County representative successfully attain passage of the act that created the new county.
1860- Population: 3,315
1870- Population: 4,606
1880- Population: 5,341
1890- Population: 6,151
1899- Cleveland received its first telephone line, which was a single line to the city from Gainesville Telephone Company.
1900- Population: 5,912
1910- Population: 5,110
1920- Population: 6,105
1922-1926- The Federal Government began to purchase large tracts of land that were heavily damaged by logging and mining in the area, consolidated it, and created the Georgia Nation Forest, which later became the Chattahoochee National Forest. Following the creation of automobiles, roads were developed from Cleveland to Clayton, as well as roads from Cleveland to Blairesville.
1930- Population: 6,056
1940- Population: 6,417
1946- Truett McConnell University, a four-year liberal arts institution affiliated with the Georgia Baptist Convention, was established.
1950- Population: 5,951
February 17, 1951- I’d Climb the highest Mountain, a movie that was filmed in Georgia with vast amounts filmed in Cleveland, Helen, and Nora Mill.
April 12, 1951- Prior to legislation being passed that allowed women jurors, Mary Ball Tinius was seated on a jury in White County, Georgia.
1954- Unicoi State Park, a 1050 acre park, was established.
1960- Population 6,935
1964- The present day White County Courthouse was constructed.
1970- Population: 7,742
1980- Population: 10,120
1990- Population: 13,006
2000- Population: 19,994
2010- Population: 27,144
