Lumpkin County Historical Timeline
- 1829 The beginning of the country’s first major Gold Rush
- December 3, 1832 Georgias 82nd county, Lumpkin County was originally created from land that was ceded by the Cherokee Indians. The county was named for Wilson Lumpkin, who was Governor of Georgia at that time in history; he also served as a U.S. Congressman.
- 1833 Dahlonega was selected as Lumpkin County’s county seat
- 1835 A branch of the U.S. Mint was constructed in Lumpkin County, which operated until 1861.
- 1838 The first gold coins were produced in Dahlonega, GA: Half Eagle ($5 Gold), Quarter Eagle ($2.50 Gold), and Gold Dollars.
- 1840 Population: 5,671
- 1849 Dr. Matthe Stephenson gave his famous speech coining the famous quote, “There’s Million in It.”
- 1850 Population: 8,955
- 1854 The only year that the rare three dollar gold coin was issued.
- 1857 The southern section of the Lumpkin County line was redrawn in the 13th district and was incorporated into Dawson County.
- 1858 The county line as redrawn again, in the eastern section of Lumpkin’s 1st district and was added to White County.
- 1860 Population: 4,626
- 1861 Company E, Phillip’s Legion Infantry- The Blue Ridge Rifles were organized.
- 1870 Population: 5,161
- April 1871 The Dahlonega Mint building was donated to the State of Georgia to be used as an education facility.
- 1873 North Georgia Agricultural College was established in what was the mint building.
- 1878 The Lumpkin County Mint burned and a new building was constructed on the Mints original foundation. Today, this building is used as the administrative offices of North Georgia College and State University.

- 1890 Population: 6,867
- 1900 Population: 7,433
- 1910 Population: 5,444
- 1920 Population: 5,240
- 1930 Population: 4,927
- 1940 Population: 6,223
- 1950 Population: 6,574
- 1958 The drill platoon at North Georgia College and State University was renamed as the Blue Ridge Rifles, in honor of the original unit from 1861.
- 1960 Population: 7,241
- 1970 Population: 8,728
- 1980 Population: 10,762
- 1990 Population: 14,573
- 2000 Population: 21,016
- 2010 Population: 29,966
- 2015 State Senator Steve Gooch introduced Georgia Senate Resolution 125, which officially recognized Lumpkin County as the Wine Tasting Room Capital of Georgia.
